Is Yo-Yo Dieting Harmful?

Yo-yo dieting (also called 'weight cycling') is very discouraging.
However, there is no firm evidence that it is harmful.

For example:

  • Yo-yo dieting does not have a permanent effect on your metabolic rate.
  • Yo-yo dieting does not increase the amount of your fat tissue.
  • Yo-yo dieting does not increase the fat deposits in your abdominal area.

But like I say, yo-yo dieting is very discouraging, so it's best avoided if at all possible.

Note:
The best way to avoid yo-yo dieting is to avoid diets that result only in "temporary" improvements in your weight. Such diets include all those that fail to teach you good long-term eating habits.
